Rehabilitation Services

/images/uploads/smart_moves_web_size.jpgThe Rehabilitation Center at Lenoir Memorial is a 17-bed physical rehabilitation unit. The center, which opened in 1993, is located on the 7th Floor of the hospital and patients benefit not only from the center's program but from all available services at the hospital.

The center gives both help and hope to people who have physical impairment. The goal of the center is to help patients reach the highest level of independence possible. Its patients include those who have neurological disorders, arthritis, amputations, orthopaedic problems, general debilitation and stroke.

Through the team approach to treatment, patients receive a personalized rehabilitation program as well as a set of realistic goals. The rehab team consists of the patient, the patient's family, the patient's personal physician, a rehabilitation physician, rehabilitation nursing staff, physical therapy staff, occupational therapy staff, a speech language pathologist, a rehabilitation psychologist, and a dietitian. The SMART moves patient positioning system allows patients the safety of a proven positioning system and adds to their sense of security during their stay.

In order to best serve these patients, many distinctive features were incorporated into the design of Rehab Center. Rooms are extra large to accommodate specialized equipment. There's also an activity and dining room and a modern gymnasium featuring the latest equipment for a variety of training exercises.

The center's Independent Living Apartment allows patients and their family members to practice activities routinely encountered in the home environment - prior to the patient's discharge. This "practice" makes the patient and the family feel more comfortable with the patient's abilities and more in-tune with what can be expected when the patient returns home.

The Rehabilitation Services Department provides inpatient and outpatient therapy services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Recreation therapy services are provided on an inpatient basis. The goal of Rehabilitation Services is to restore the patient's level of independence, thereby improving the patient's quality of life.

Outpatient Rehab Services are provided in the lower level gym. The gym is staffed by physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physical therapy assistants and occupational therapy assistants. The gym is stocked with a variety of equipment which enables physical and occupational therapists to assist patients in regaining range of motion, increasing strength and in performing routine movements crucial to the patient's work or daily living tasks. An unweighing system allows therapists to work with patients experiencing balance deficiencies. Speech therapists treat adult patients for a variety of problems from rate of speech to swallowing disorders. Speech therapists also work with children between the ages of 2 1/2 to 7 who have speech delays.

Outpatient Rehab also offers an Occupational Medicine Program to the business and industry community. The purpose of the program is to analyze work stations and investigate specific work tasks to make sure they are safe for workers to perform. This proactive approach to workplace safety can reduce the number of disabling on-the-job injuries as well as work-related deaths.
